Fantastic Animals Cocktail at Xochi: The Happy Alien

Through October 18, Xochi is pouring the Happy Alien, a mezcal cocktail created for Fantastic Animals: Alebrijes and Nahuales from México, the sculpture exhibition across the street at Discovery Green.

Eight 20-foot sculptures are standing throughout Discovery Green through October 18, free to view, and every one of them is an enlarged reproduction of an original work by a celebrated Oaxacan artist.

That is the same Oaxaca we cook from. Fantastic Animals: Alebrijes and Nahuales from México was designed and created by Mexican artists and artisans, drawing on the legacy of Mexico City artist Pedro Linares, who is credited with popularizing the fantastical creatures known as alebrijes. Those original works come from Oaxaca, the same region whose moles, masa and mezcal fill our menu across the street.

One of the eight is Happy Alien by the late Constantino Blas, a farmer who became a nationally recognized sculptor. Discovery Green describes the piece as having a grin as wide as the Milky Way.

Our bartender April Zelaya built a cocktail for it. Happy Alien: blood orange liqueur, Amarás mezcal, pomegranate juice, simple syrup, fresh lime juice and Scrappy's Fire Tincture bitters. $1 from every one sold goes to Discovery Green Conservancy, the nonprofit that operates and maintains the park and funds more than 600 free events there each year.

Xochi is in Downtown Houston inside the Marriott Marquis, directly across from Discovery Green. Walk the park, then come see us.
